Milk
Basic White Sauce

The basic white sauce can be used ‘as is’ however it is generally used as the base for other more flavorful sauces.

  1. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a low heat
  2. Add the flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly
  3. Gradually stir in the milk until you have a smooth white sauce
  4. Season to taste with salt and pepper then simmer very gently for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally
